an escalade was an awfully flashy car, especially for a boy who preferred to blend into his surroundings more than anything else, but it had been a sixteenth birthday gift from his father, who never went cheap on anything. maybe when he was older nathaniel would swap it out for something more practical but so long as he was under his fathers roof the suv would have to suffice. the main problem was that nathaniel always found himself running over curbs or turning entirely too wide and ending up in the wrong lane; the thing was absolutely huge and when it came down to it, nat wasn't the greatest driver in the world. the more that he thought about it though, the more getting into an "accident" seemed like a good idea. knowing his father though he'd just end up with a brand spanking new one in the driveway a few days later. maybe that time in bright white instead of the somewhat subtle black he currently had.
mall paring was always hell, and with such a massive car and an inability to park it properly, nat found himself about as far away from the mall as he possibly could be. with a resolved sigh, nat slipped from his car and began his journey across the lot. living in california certainly had its perks for most people and warm weather was one of them but even then once it started getting close to winter, the temperatures did start to drop. nathaniel though, he reveled in the colder weather, preferring it to the blistering summers that had become more and more frequent. the long walk across the pavement was welcome, with the chilly air biting through his cardigan. if it were up to him, nathaniel would have spent the day outside, maybe going for a run or just sitting at the beach, anything really, but he was sure that teagan wouldn't really appreciate it. most people weren't huge fans of the winter time, the chilly weather that came along with it, and they typically gave him weird looks when he admitted that he loved it.
before evenin realizing it, nathaniel found himself at the doors of the shopping mall, the glass sliding open automatically and a blast of heat hitting him as he stepped inside. pulling his phone from his back pocket, nat typed out a quick text and hit send. 'i'm here. meet me in the food court when you get here?' nat wasn't exactly the mall type, but when winter fell there wasn't really much else to do in moss landing. besides, teagan was the most fashionable person he knew and it never hurt to get her opinion if he did decide to get something.
the food court wasn't far from the entrance and nathaniel made his way there easily, settling into one of the uncomfortable metal chairs strewn around the random arrangement of tables there. he stretched his long legs out in front of him, crossing them at the ankle and leaning back in his chair. it was close to christmas time, which meant that the mall was buzzing with shoppers running around and trying to get the best holiday deals. nat was lucky in the fact that he didn't have many to buy for, just a handful of friends and then his father. it was really the one time of the year that having practically no close family paid off.

626 WORDS FOR HALE/NATHANIEL sorry this isn't the best, but it'll get better! HERE is her outfit. DREAM | [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,450,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: #6d6d6d;]teagan was quiet as she sat in front of her vanity, brushing her hair out. she kept glancing at her phone on the table beside her. she was already running late, having overslept for her brunch with her parents and then rushed home so she could change and catch up with her best friend/little brother. she looked at her reflection and took note of the dark rings under her eyes and the bags. she groaned under her breath as she took her image in. she looked like a mess. ever since that night, she had nightmares and the inability to fall asleep, fearing that something would happen to her in the middle of the night. she looked at the pictures framing the mirror of her vanity and couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness in her stomach as she caught sight of all the pictures of her and wyatt together.
she mentally had kicked herself over and over about her rapid decision to end things with him, considering how much she missed him constantly. she opened her drawer and pulled out her concealer, covering up the obvious indication that she lacked sleep. she finished her usual makeup routine and stood up, going over to the closet. she picked out a sweater and threw her usual circle scarf over her head, pulling her hair out of the way. she slipped her socks over her leggings and pulled her combat boots on, lacing them up. she grabbed her purse and iphone off the dresser and turned off the lights to her room, heading down the stairs. the living room fireplace was on and the dogs were nestled in front of the warmth, looking at her as she left the room. she made her way to the garage pressing the large pad to open the door, revealing her sleek, black lexus waiting casually in the driveway.
she opened the door and slid in, dropping her purse into the seat beside her and her cellphone into the cupholder, plugging it in so she could listen to her music as she drove. christmas music played lightly in the background as she took off down the road, heading towards the mall. her phone buzzed and she knew instantly it was nathaniel. she waited to get to a stoplight before she quickly replied with a simple smiley-face, knowing she shouldn't really be texting while driving. the line to get into the parking lot was rather long and she sighed, leaning back into her seat, cussing quietly under her breath.
finally, she pulled into the parking lot and pulled into a spot as soon as she spotted one. it was busy, all the people holiday shopping. she grabbed her bag and phone and pushed the door open, stretching her legs out. she shut the door, locking the car behind her as she strutted down the parking lot towards the entrance of the mall. she gave her eyes a few minutes to adjust to the lights before she began her search through the throngs of people in the food court. it wasn't long before she spotted a red-haired, familiar, friendly face and a smile crossed her features, something that hadn't been present in a while. she made her way through the people to the table nat was sitting at and slid into the metal seat across from him, beaming. "hey there stranger! haven't seen you in a while," she teased him, smiling and reaching to let her hand guide his face upwards at her.
"i feel like it's been forever! how have you been, dear?" she felt like his mother sometimes. protective over nat as if he were her own child or her own little brother, which was something teagan never had growing up. |

people watching had always been a major habit of nathaniel's. it had started sort of unintentionally. when nat was younger he seemed to always end up alone in the cafeteria, which was probably due to the mess of freckles and bushy red afro he was cursed with as a child. spending so much time alone had lead him to become more of an observer, picking up on small things about people that other didn't notice. for instance, a few tables away there was a woman busily chatting away on the phone, ignoring her small child, who seemed to be finger painting in his ketchup. surely the woman would regret not paying more attention later when she had to clean all of the condiment off of her son, but for nathaniel's sake it was rather amusing. he'd grown up without a mother but from what he saw the women were always one extreme or another. some were overly protective, watching their children like a hawk, while others seemed more interested in other things and often ignored their children. from the very few things that his father had ever said about his other, nathaniel assumed the woman probably would have been in the latter category. the fact didn't bother him though. she'd left when he was a baby and so he never really felt as though he'd actually lost anyone.
so caught up in his thoughts, nathaniel didn't even notice that teagan had sat down until she reached across the table and physically guided his face toward her. it startled him slightly, but he recovered quickly, the only sign that he'd been frightened being his increased heart rate. "sorry, sorry. i didn't see you come up," he explained hurriedly, his cheeks flushing a soft pink color. beneath the table he clasped his hands together, nervously wringing them. he hated that he could still get this way even though he and teagan had been friends for a few years. maybe if he hadn't been startled and maybe if his heart wasn't racing, but he was feeling slightly embarrassed, even though he knew teagan wasn't judging him, and it was in turn making him feel more nervous that usual. was it going to be possible for him to ever be able to hold a conversation with someone without feeling any anxiety at all?
while it probably couldn't technically be considered "forever," nat could definitely understand the sentiment behind the words. back before teagan had graduated, they had seen each other practically every day but now that they weren't at the same school they sometimes went a few weeks at a time without seeing each other. teagan still made a valiant effort though, and nathaniel had always loved that about her. she took care of him when he needed it, provided him with that female influence he'd always been missing in his life. he'd never been blessed with siblings since his father had never remarried after his mother left, and teagan was the closest thing that he'd ever had to an older sister.
running a hand sheepishly through his hair, nat offered teagan a genuine smile before responding. she was probably one of the only people he knew that could actually pry one of those from him. "it's been fine. pretty ready for christmas break to start, of course. you're lucky you've graduated, i don't know if i can handle this last semester," he explained easily, the words coming out better than the last time he had opened his mouth. it always ended up being relaxing, talking to teagan. she was the one person nat felt like he could really open up to. well, at least almost completely open up to. "how about you? anything new since the last time we hung out?" he asked curiously.
